Many mental mediums (like the ones on tv) see spirits the in their mind's eye. This is a form of clairvoyance (subjective clairvoyance). When I was in mediumship class I would see spirits this way. I would ask them to show me scenes from their life and they would show me things like where they worked, the house they lived in etc. I would ask them to show me what things they did with the person getting the reading and I'd see them at the movie theater on a date etc. All of this was verified by the person getting the reading.
UPDATE:
Seeing spirits outside yourself in the environment when other people don't is called objective clairvoyance.
