We can't, because you won't specify anything about this disembodied consciousness. For example, does it communicate with the brain via electromagnetic energy? If so, we should be able to break it with a Faraday cage. What parts of my memory are stored in my brain and what parts in the consciousness? If we knew that, we could run experiments when you're unconscious. Where is the filter and how come no one has discovered it yet?

You're essentially saying: There is a feedback loop between a whats-it and my brain; disprove it! Either the whats-it has certain specified effects on the world, in which case we should be able to study those, or it has no effects on the world, in which case:

If the existence of a thing is indistinguishable from its nonexistence, we say that thing does not exist. ---Yahzi

Of what advantage is it to postulate this disemodied consciousness and the filter?
