Yoga stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system. The parasympathetic nervous system is used in the body's normal recovery from a stress reaction, so stimulating it is a way to counteract stress. Since stress can cause disease, anything that helps counteract stress can help with healing or prevention of disease.

Yoga can also help restore full range of motion. As a person goes through life stress has a tendency to make muscles tense and this tension accumulates and over time people lose the full range of motion in their joints. This is why old people tend to hunch over and walk with shuffling gait. By restoring full range of motion or preventing loss of it, a person will be able to get more exercise in general and be more active and possibly avoid back injuries from poor posture. Exercise also helps prevent disease so anything that allows people to be more active will help in that way too.

Yoga is also good for the spine. Most nerves in the body go through the spine and the body controls many internal systems through the nervous system. Any misalignments in the spine can effect these controls so a healthy spine will help keep the bodily system functioning correctly.
