Default The Overwhelming Evidence for Materialism

- Anecdotal accounts of unconsciousness during anesthesia or dreamless sleep (for which other interpretations are possible)

That's it.

The theory of Materialism is as strong as the theory that the Earth is flat or the silly theory that the universe was created in six days.
Materialism has no grounding in modern Physics. Materialism is an ideology that many smart people blindly followed, sadly we have to get rid of our preconceived notions as new data comes in.
According to peer reviewed, carefully controlledand rigorously done Scientific experiements we can now safely say : MATERIALISM IS A MYTH.
Here is one reason, Three decades ago, the American Physicist Leonard Susskind and the British Physicist Stephen Hawking began clashung over the answer to the question '' When something is sucked into a black hole, is it lost forever? Hawking insisted that anything that fell into a black hole disappeared, to get Hawking to finally admit he was wrong, Susskind and Dutch Physicist Gerard 't Hooft would push physics way beyond the weird, they would prove that EVERYTHING IN OUR PHYSICAL WORLD- THIS COMPUTER, YOUR HOUSE, AND YOUR VERY SELF- IS ACTUALLY A HOLOGRAM PROJECTED FROM THE FARTHEST REALM OF SPACE.
The ancient wisdom traditions were right, this world is an illusion and has been projected from something much larger. So to repeat myself again, DEATH IS NOT THE END, DEATH IS MERELY A MOVEMENT FROM ONE PLANE OF EXISTENCE TO ANOTHER WHERE WE WILL MEET ALL OUR LOVED ONCE AGAIN AND REALIZE THE DEEPEST WONDERS AND SECRETS OF THE UNIVERSE.
For more information see Leonard Susskind's book Black Hole Wars ( Although he does not mention anything about the afterlife) and also be sure to see the Holographic Universe by Michael Talbom.
I attended an Atheist conference in Dublin last week and someone was wearing a t - shirt saying ' SMILE THERE IS NO HELL'.
I am going to create a new T-Shirt saying: ' SMILE THERE IS NO DEATH'

I shared this with eveshi but i think more people will find it interesting. An alternative view to physicalism and materialism:

How about Alzheimer's that slowly debilitates a person until they are no longer the same person they used to be, due to brain changes.

Materialism has a strong argument supporting it. But there's an equally pervasive and thorough body of evidence refuting it. Materialism is neither completely false nor the complete truth. It's part of a dual nature of the physical world's effects versus non-material effects.

Indicative of interaction between mind and brain. Compatible with mental monism, neutral monism, panpsychism (and even, to a lower degree, substance dualism).
Materialists often think that examples of brain damage make dualism less probable (I agree with them) and that materialism therefore must be correct (I disagree with them).

I encourage everyone, sympathetic to materialism/physicalism or not, to show me what (s)he thinks is the strongest evidence for materialism. I will show why it is neutral with regards to materialism, at best, or no evidence at all, at worst.

An open challenge. I like it! This could get interesting.

Personally, I'm not a proponent of "materialism" - that is, while many of my views may be consistent with that philosophy, I hold no philosophical position about how the universe is made up. If the evidence is reliable enough to demonstrate that there is something other than matter/energy that interacts with this universe, then I have no problem accepting that.

I'm just not there yet that there's this immaterial (not matter/energy) stuff out there.

I'm pretty much with Arouet. Specifically, I would bet that if proponents of various metaphysical positions would flesh out their models of the world in sufficient detail, we would find that physicalism and idealism were the same modulo language.

I'll go with scientific naturalism until something else comes along that works better.
