I was actually trying to point up the implicit claim that lies in assuming that the observation>hypothesis>theory process is integral to dealing with the question.
Given that even after all this time neither of the two primary camps has prevailed then it would seem worthwhile beariing in mind the possibility (likelihood, imo) that both worldviews are significantly flawed and leave room open for alternatives.
Dig deep enough into either and you will find at least one point of tacit agreement between them though, which has passed into the vernacular as a hollywood quote of all things

"there is no spoon".
