Default Scientists Claim Brain Memory Code Cracked

Scientists claim brain memory code cracked

Quote:
They show how CaMKII kinase domains can collectively bind and phosphorylate 6-bit bytes, resulting in hexagonally-based patterns of phosphorylated tubulins in microtubules. Craddock et al calculate enormous information capacity at low energy cost, demonstrate microtubule-associated protein logic gates, and show how patterns of phosphorylated tubulins in microtubules can control neuronal functions by triggering axonal firings, regulating synapses, and traversing scale.....

Hameroff, senior author on the study, said: "Many neuroscience papers conclude by claiming their findings may help understand how the brain works, and treat Alzheimer's, brain injury and various neurological and psychiatric disorders. This study may actually do that. We may have a glimpse of the brain's biomolecular code for memory."

No, i actually found it interesting that hameroff was involved with this research falling into mainstream science. I wonder if he is changing his position on consciousness or if he is trying to make sure he also is remembered as a mainstream scientist and not only a quantum woo king.

With Hameroff, I'm sure he would speculate these memories could have the special non-local in space/time qualities found in QM .... therefore it still isn't an argument for materialism over alternatives.

That's in no way what this research implies. It's a 100% Classic intepretation between protein formation and synaptic activity.

And no Gabriel, Hameroff is quoted for the extraordinary implications of this research - it's not the journalists intepretation. You can't dismiss All research you don't like the implications of with the funding/sensationalist argument.

"Scientists Claim Brain Memory Code Cracked" is a tabloid headline. Any scientist making such a definitive claim would be hauled before their HOD and asked to explain themselves. Or has academic careerism sunk this far?

It's a certainty the the title of the short article was chosen by the website to get readers too read it. As sbu said: You can't dismiss All research you don't like the implications of with the funding/sensationalist argument. Or careerism.

Implications of this -- OK understand it is very much far fetched but let's say in 50 years time the code is completely cracked and memories are in a readable format and we can also say when they were formed. Imagine the implications for the judiciary system. No innocent person condemned. All there will be to check is people's memories.
Again this is far fetched but could be a good sci fi thriller
